According to a popular story, the layered flatbread now known as roti paratha was inspired by an attempt to improve soldiers' daily meals. Dough mixed with shortening formed delicate layers when cooked, creating a crisp exterior and a soft interior. The food later became a well-known Taiwanese snack and remains popular today.
